You’ve officially entered the design phase of your project.
Aurora Interiors is proud to partner with DS Custom Construction to guide you through the hundreds of design decisions that transform a house into your home. Before we meet, there are just a few quick steps that will help us make the most of your design consultation.
The Aurora Experience
Your Next Steps
Before we begin selecting finishes and materials, we’ll ask you to complete a few simple steps that help us prepare for your consultation.
Gather Inspiration
Create a Pinterest Board or save images that reflect the style, colors, materials, and spaces you’re drawn to. Don’t worry about perfection, we’re simply looking for patterns that help us understand your vision. We’ll ask you to hare this Pinterest board or photos in the next step.
Fill Out Design Questionnaire
Tell us about your lifestyle, priorities, and how you envision living in your new home. Your responses help us prepare for your consultation and tailor our recommendations specifically to you.
Schedule Discovery Call
Every project is different. On this 20 minute call we will review the answers from your questionnaire and establish our understanding of your style and project. This helps us enter our design meeting with confidence of a shared understanding of goals. After this call you will get a link to book our design appointment.
Designer for a Day
During your consultation, we'll review your inspiration, refine your vision, and guide you through the selections that will shape your home. You'll leave with clarity, confidence, and a cohesive direction for the next phase of your build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our goal is to make the design process feel clear, organized, and enjoyable. Here are answers to a few questions you may have before we begin.
-
That's completely okay—in fact, it's one of the most common things we hear. You don't need to know whether your style is "modern," "traditional," or anything in between. Through your questionnaire, inspiration images, and our conversation, we'll identify the patterns in what you're naturally drawn to and help define a direction that feels authentic to you.
-
The length of your Designer for a Day Meeting depends on the size and scope of your project. Each consultation is thoughtfully tailored to ensure we have enough time to make confident, well-informed decisions without feeling rushed.
As a general guideline:
Bathrooms, powder rooms, and laundry rooms: Approximately 1.5–2 hours
Kitchens, basements, and multi-room projects: Approximately 2–3 hours
Whole-home remodels and new construction: Approximately 3–4 hours
We'll let you know what to expect before your meeting so you can plan your day accordingly.
-
Following your Designer for a Day consultation, you'll receive a professionally curated Design Presentation showcasing all of the selections made during our time together, along with a detailed Specification Schedule documenting each product, finish, and material selected for your project.
These documents are intended to provide a clear record of your design selections and will be shared with DS Custom Homes as the foundation for your project.
Designer for a Day is a standalone design consultation and does not include construction drawings, renderings, product procurement, or ongoing construction support. If you decide you'd like additional design services beyond your consultation, we'd be happy to discuss our Full-Service Design offerings.
-
The number of selections we'll complete depends largely on how quickly decisions are made during your consultation. That's why we ask you to complete your questionnaire and gather inspiration beforehand—so we can spend our time refining and executing your vision rather than discovering it. The more prepared you are, the more decisions we'll typically be able to make together.
If additional design time is needed, you may choose to purchase additional consultation time with our design team. Otherwise, we'll ensure you leave with a clear understanding of any remaining decisions and the guidance needed to move forward confidently.
-
Yes. Once your Designer for a Day consultation is complete, you're welcome to make changes to your selections. However, we encourage you to make decisions thoughtfully, as changes made after the consultation may impact your builder's schedule, material ordering, or construction timeline.
If you'd like Aurora Interiors' guidance in evaluating new options or revising your selections, we're happy to assist through additional design services billed at our current hourly rate.
-
Your first point of contact should always be your DS Custom Construction construction team. They are overseeing your project and will coordinate all communication throughout the build.
If a question requires design clarification or input from Aurora Interiors, your construction team will work directly with our design team to ensure everyone stays aligned and your project continues moving forward smoothly.
-
That's perfectly okay! Pinterest is simply our preferred platform because it's free, easy to use, and offers an incredible library of design inspiration. As you begin saving images to your board, Pinterest will also recommend similar styles and ideas, making it easier to discover what you're naturally drawn to.
If Pinterest feels overwhelming, you're welcome to upload photos you've already saved to your phone, screenshots from Instagram, magazine clippings, or any other images that inspire you.
Inspiration images are one of the most important tools we use during the design process. Design terminology can mean different things to different people, but images provide a shared visual language. Often, a client may describe their style one way, while the spaces they're consistently drawn to tell a different story. Looking for those patterns helps us better understand your vision and create a home that truly feels like you.
-
Absolutely! In fact, we strongly encourage all primary decision-makers to attend the Designer for a Day consultation. Having everyone present allows us to make decisions together, answer questions in real time, and ensure everyone is aligned before selections are finalized.
When all decision-makers participate, the process is typically more efficient and there's less likelihood of revisions or changes later, helping keep your project moving forward on schedule.
-
We're here to support you however you need us.
While Builder Design Concierge is designed to help you confidently navigate your design selections, some homeowners discover they'd like additional guidance throughout their project. If that's the case, we'd be happy to discuss transitioning your project into our Full-Service Interior Design offering.
Should you choose to move forward with Full-Service Design, we'll prepare a custom design proposal based on the scope of your project and apply a credit equal to the value of your Designer for a Day consultation toward your overall design fee.
Whether you need a little guidance or a design partner from concept through construction, we're here to help create a home you'll love.
Past Project
The Colvos Project
Every design decision was made with intention. A palette of warm earth tones, sculptural microcement finishes, and sleek European cabinetry creates a calm, minimalist interior where texture takes precedence over ornamentation, allowing the surrounding views to become an integral part of the design.
